Chapter Twenty

Detective Wayne Nichols

Wayne and Evangeline were walking to the car when Rob came running up, his hair windblown and wet. The rain was falling harder now.

“I found it,” he said, satisfaction animating his boyish face. He took off his glasses, dotted with raindrops, and attempted to dry them on the lining of his jacket.

“We can talk on the ride back,” Wayne said. “Let’s get going.” He glanced down the street toward Zoé’s marigold-colored house and saw Marie Canja come out through the front door, turn, and lock it with a key. The dogs are at Mae’s. What would the woman have to do now in that house? He frowned.

None of them spoke until they reached the top of the hill. They stopped under an elm that still had most of its leaves, providing some shelter from the rain.

“Okay, what did you find, Rob?” Wayne asked.

“I found the bottle of scopolamine. It’s a clear liquid and it looked like nothing but a little glass bottle of water until I read the label. It had a drawing of a plant on it with the label ‘Belladonna.’ That’s the plant scopolamine comes from, according to the research I did on the drug after I read the coroner’s report. I took a picture of the bottle showing the surroundings and a close-up of the label. Didn’t find any perfume though. Sorry.”

“Okay,” Wayne said. He knew he should be acting more enthusiastic about Rob’s find, but the image of Marie Canja locking Zoé’s door was troubling him. Marie had learned about the real estate purchase offer on the night Zoé died. She had left the house to speak to the Houngan before Mira and Zoé were off the phone. And now Rob had found the scopolamine in the area where the Voodooists held their ceremonies.

“Maybe we can get Emma to check for fingerprints on the scopolamine bottle from my photo. If the prints on the bottle are the same as those on Zoé’s eyelids, would that be enough for an arrest?” Eager for action, Rob slid into the backseat and drummed his fingers on the seat in front.

“It’s possible,” Wayne said, starting the engine, “but we have to get a search warrant before we can do any of that. You need to know what Evangeline and I found out. Zoé got a message the night she was killed from her friend, Ginny. We don’t have her last name, but she works in Richfield for a realtor. There can’t be that many real estate offices in a town that small.”

“Should I start working on that?” Rob asked as they drove out of the village.

“No,” Wayne said, “hold off until I can discuss all this with Ben. Ginny’s message for Zoé was that she found an Offer to Purchase the entire tract of eighty acres that includes the Voodoo Village. The offer was for a million dollars. The night Zoé died, she heard a customer at the bar say something about bulldozing the village. She called her grandmother about it.
